Introduction Your child is an individual and different fromallothers. The way your child learns best depends on manyfactors:age, learning style, and personality. Read the notes below,andthink about your child. This will help you to choose activitiesandmethods that will suit your child best. Children passthroughdifferent stages of learning ✔A baby or infant learns abouttheworld through the senses. ✔From about two until seven years oldthechild starts to develop the ability to reason and think butisstill self-centered. ✔After the age of about seven a childusuallybecomes less self-centered and can look outside themselves.By theage of 12, most children can reason and test out their ideasaboutthe world. ✔This means that with younger children we needtopersonalize and give examples that relate to themselves,whereasolder children need help to make sense of the world aroundthem.This also means that children must be at the right stageoflearning. For example, younger children are ready to learnaboutnumbers, colors, and shapes but are not ready forabstractgrammatical rules. What kind of learner is your child? ✔Itisimportant to understand how your child likes to learn best.Whichare the child's dominant senses? Do they like pictures andreading?If so you can encourage your child to use drawings,pictures, mapsor diagrams as part of their learning. ✔Some childrenlikelistening to explanations and reading aloud. You could usestoriesto encourage this kind of child. And most children enjoylearningthrough songs, chants, and rhymes. ✔Does your child like totouchthings and physically move about? Some children have lotsofenergy! You could play games to get them moving or runningaround,acting out rhymes or stories or even dancing! ✔Quieterchildren mayhave good vocabulary and be good readers. Word games,crosswords,word searches, anagrams, and tongue twisters would begood toencourage these children. ✔Other children require logical,clearexplanations of rules and patterns, or like to work out therulesfor themselves. They may be good at maths too. For thesechildren,activities such as puzzles, problem-solving, orderingorcategorizing provide ideal opportunities for learning. What kindofinteraction does your child prefer? ✔Some children are outgoingandsociable and can learn a language quickly because they wanttocommunicate. They are not worried about making mistakes.✔Otherchildren are quieter and more reflective. They learn bylisteningand observing what is happening. They don't like to makemistakesand will wait until they are sure. ✔If your child isoutgoing theymay prefer learning in groups with other children,whereas aquieter child may need more private, quiet time to feelmore secureabout learning a language. A bedtime story in Englishcould be anopportunity to provide this quiet time. Motivating yourchild ✔Fora child to be motivated, learning needs to be fun andstress-free.Encourage them to follow their own interests andpersonal likes.For example, if your child likes football he or shewill probablylike to read a story about football even if the levelis a littledifficult. Interest and motivation often allow childrento copewith more difficult language. ✔Try to provide as manyfunactivities as you can for learning English. Songs and music,videosand DVDs, and all sorts of games are motivating for children.Forhow long can your child concentrate? ✔Children can usuallyonlyconcentrate for short periods of time. Make sure that you stoporchange activity when your child is bored or restless. This mightbeafter only a few minutes.
